An error was received from the ESX host while powering on VM

I was asked to troubleshoot a VMware VM that would not power back on after the host ESXi server was upgraded.

An error was received from the ESX host while powering on VM 'VM_NAME'.Could not create '/vmfs/volumes/dd28c2f5-e31c195f/VM_NAME'': Could not find the file

The GUID and VM name you see will be different.

After investigating the virtual machines VMX file I found the nvram value was empty.

Missing vmx nvram Value

This value is should be the same name as your VM and can be confirmed by browsing the datastore to confirm the existence and name of the 'VM_NAME.nvram' file.
